The Hybrid Designer

A memoir of reinvention, design, resilience, and one woman's unconventional path into interior design.

About the book

A life built — and rebuilt — by hand.

Bea Gardner grew up modestly, lost her father young, and became an adult before she had any business being one. She raised her children, found her way to art and design, and slowly, stubbornly, built a respected interior design career in Columbus, Ohio.

The Hybrid Designer is the story of what it took — the detours, the late starts, the quiet wins, and the limits placed on women of her generation that she crossed anyway.

A Life in Design

Three threads that run through every chapter.

Reinvention

Starting over — at twenty, at forty, at seventy — and learning that the page is rarely as blank as it looks.

Resilience

Loss, single-motherhood, and the quiet daily work of choosing the next right thing, again and again.

Interior Design Legacy

Forty years of homes, showrooms, and Columbus clients — and the craft of making rooms feel like people.
